Yard management system (YMS)

A yard management system (YMS) is software that runs the yard outside a warehouse, distribution centre or plant: the gate, the parking of trucks, trailers and containers, the moves between parking and dock doors, and the scheduling of those doors. It shows where every trailer is and which truck goes to which door next.

Also called YMS, yard management softwareUpdated 12 October 2026

What a YMS does

Gartner's 2025 market guide defines a YMS as software that supports the flow of work, equipment and materials through the enclosed area outside a warehouse, distribution centre or factory — the yard. In practice that means three places:

PlaceWhat the YMS handles
GateChecking trucks in and out at the gate or a kiosk, against an appointment
YardScheduling, moving, parking, inspecting and reassigning trucks, trailers and containers
Dock doorsScheduling inbound and outbound doors, so each truck has a slot and a door

Gartner notes a YMS is often sold as an extended module of a warehouse management system, as an independent suite, or as part of a transportation management system, and that it is still used mostly by large companies with big yards and many movements in and out.

Worked example: why appointments matter

Suppose a site has 6 dock doors, each load takes 45 minutes, and 40 trucks turn up between 08:00 and 10:00 because nobody booked a time.

Loads the doors can finish by 10:00 = 6 doors × ⌊120 ÷ 45⌋ = 6 × 2 = 12

So 28 trucks are still waiting at 10:00. Spread the same 40 trucks over appointments from 08:00 to 16:00 and the doors offer 6 × ⌊480 ÷ 45⌋ = 60 slots — room for all 40 with no queue.

The queue is not free. Trucks held beyond the free time in their contract run up detention charges, and a driver waiting at a US dock is using hours of service they could have spent driving.

Who needs one

Gartner suggests a YMS for sites with large fleets, a high volume of supplier and customer shipments, or yard and dock-door congestion — and advises first checking whether the yard features already built into a WMS or transport system are enough.

The mistake people make

Installing a YMS and not enforcing the appointments. A yard map shows the queue; only booked slots, honoured at the gate, shorten it.

FAQ

Yard management system (YMS): common questions

What does a YMS do?
It manages the gate, the yard and the dock doors: checking trucks in and out, tracking where every truck, trailer and container is parked, moving them to and from doors, and scheduling inbound and outbound dock appointments.
Do I need a YMS if I already have a WMS?
Perhaps not. Gartner advises checking whether the yard features in your warehouse or transport system cover your needs before buying a separate suite. A dedicated YMS earns its place where the yard is large, busy or congested.
Who uses a yard management system?
Mostly large companies with extensive yards and many movements in and out — distribution centres, plants and cross-docks with heavy supplier and customer traffic, per Gartner's 2025 market guide.
