Multi-stop truckload (stop-off charges)

A multi-stop truckload is a full truckload that is loaded or unloaded at more than one place, with each extra stop charged as a stop-off. The first pickup and the final delivery are not stop-offs. FedEx Freight's 2026 tariff charges $470 per stop-off; J.B. Hunt publishes $250, $350, then $500 a stop.

FedEx Freight, 100-Y tariff, from 5 January 2026$470Distance via the stops beyond 115% of the shortest route charged at $14.37 a mile
J.B. Hunt, quick-rate terms$250 for the first, $350 for the second, $500 for the third and each after$2.50 a mile for all mileage beyond the first delivery stop
PITT OHIO, item 900$80Up to three stops

The linehaul is rated as one shipment. PITT OHIO's tariff charges the minimum weight, or the actual weight if greater, of the entire shipment at the truckload rate to the point to which the highest rate applies — the stop-off charges come on top. PITT OHIO allows stop-offs only on shipments of 20,000 pounds or more on one bill of lading on one day, and a stop may complete loading or partially unload, not both.

Worked example: one pickup, three drops

Pickup → drop 1 → drop 2 → final drop · stop-offs: drops 1 and 2 = 2 · FedEx Freight: 2 × $470 = $940 · J.B. Hunt: $250 + $350 = $600, plus 120 miles after drop 1 × $2.50 = $300 → $900

Charges from each carrier's published terms; the route and mileage are illustrative.

The mistake people make

Adding stops after the load is booked. FedEx Freight requires stop-off arrangements to be made with the carrier before shipment. J.B. Hunt's quick rates stop applying when stops are more than 50 miles apart, fall in more than one state or number more than three: those need a special spot price and prior approval. FedEx Freight and PITT OHIO don't allow stop-offs on COD shipments.

FAQ

Multi-stop truckload (stop-off charges): common questions

What is a stop-off charge?

How many stops can a truckload have?
It depends on the carrier: PITT OHIO allows up to three, and J.B. Hunt's quick rates need a special price and approval for more than three.
