Incoterms 2020
Incoterms are the International Chamber of Commerce's eleven three-letter trade terms, such as FOB, CIF and DDP, that say where a seller delivers goods, when risk passes to the buyer, and who pays for transport, insurance and customs. The current edition, Incoterms 2020, took effect on 1 January 2020; a 2030 edition is planned for late 2029.
The eleven rules
Incoterms 2020 has seven rules for any mode of transport and four for sea and inland waterway only. The 2020 edition renamed Delivered at Terminal (DAT) as Delivered at Place Unloaded (DPU).
| Rule | Name | Mode | The seller delivers |
|---|---|---|---|
| EXW | Ex Works | Any | At its own premises, not loaded |
| FCA | Free Carrier | Any | To the buyer's carrier at a named place |
| CPT | Carriage Paid To | Any | To the first carrier, having paid carriage to the destination |
| CIP | Carriage and Insurance Paid To | Any | As CPT, and insures the goods |
| DAP | Delivered at Place | Any | At the destination, ready for unloading |
| DPU | Delivered at Place Unloaded | Any | At the destination, unloaded |
| DDP | Delivered Duty Paid | Any | At the destination, cleared for import with duties paid |
| FAS | Free Alongside Ship | Sea and inland waterway | Alongside the vessel at the port of shipment |
| FOB | Free On Board | Sea and inland waterway | On board the vessel at the port of shipment |
| CFR | Cost and Freight | Sea and inland waterway | On board, having paid freight to the destination port |
| CIF | Cost, Insurance and Freight | Sea and inland waterway | As CFR, and insures the goods |
What Incoterms do not cover
The US International Trade Administration notes that Incoterms say nothing about when title — ownership — passes from seller to buyer, nor about the method or timing of payment. Those belong in the sales contract. ICC guidance calls the title point the most commonly misunderstood.
Worked example: one sale, four prices
Suppose goods worth USD 50,000 at the factory, USD 800 to truck them to port, USD 150 for export clearance, USD 2,400 ocean freight, USD 110 insurance, USD 2,500 import duty and USD 600 delivery from the destination port. Each rule moves the price by what the seller takes on:
EXW 50,000 · FOB 50,000 + 800 + 150 = 50,950 · CIF 50,950 + 2,400 + 110 = 53,460 · DDP 53,460 + 2,500 + 600 = USD 56,560The goods are the same; the quote is not. Compare offers on the same rule, or convert them first.
What comes next
The ICC has begun revising the rules; its national committees describe the launch of Incoterms 2030 as planned for late 2029. Until then, ICC Austria notes, Incoterms 2020 remain the current and applicable set — and a contract can name any edition, so say which one you mean.
FAQ
Incoterms 2020: common questions
- How many Incoterms are there?
- Eleven in the 2020 edition: seven for any mode of transport (EXW, FCA, CPT, CIP, DAP, DPU, DDP) and four for sea and inland waterway only (FAS, FOB, CFR, CIF).
- Do Incoterms decide when ownership passes?
- No. Incoterms set delivery, risk and costs. When title passes, and how and when the buyer pays, are matters for the sales contract and the law that governs it.
- Is there an Incoterms 2030?
- Not yet. The ICC has started the revision and its national committees put the launch in late 2029. Incoterms 2020 remain the current rules, and a contract should name the edition it uses.
